Amid the growing global awareness of the importance of environmental sustainability, one type of waste that is often overlooked is used cooking oil. Many people dispose of it improperly, pouring it into drains, which leads to severe soil and water pollution. On the other hand, floor cleaning products in the market still contain harsh chemicals that pose a threat to both human health and the environment. In response to this issue, five students from Universitas Diponegoro—Fahmi Agil Prasetia, Dhea Khaililla Indiarti Parmono, Sigit Pramana, Hanin Nadiyah Al Muthi’ah, and Syafiqa Mahera El Bukhary—under the guidance of Dr. Mohamad Endy Julianto, S.T., M.T., have created an innovative and environmentally friendly solution called BiVoClean (Bio Vocational Cleaner).

Used cooking oil, a common waste generated from cooking activities, actually holds great potential as an alternative raw material. The team from the Chemical Engineering Technology Program (TRKI) of Universitas Diponegoro’s Vocational School utilized this used oil as the main ingredient in making a floor cleaner, transforming it from a useless waste into a hygienic and valuable product. Additionally, they incorporated basil leaf extract, which is not only a popular culinary ingredient but also has natural antibacterial properties and a refreshing aroma. The active compounds found in basil, such as flavonoids, phenols, and essential oils, act as natural disinfectants, providing dual benefits for this floor cleaner.

The production of BiVoClean begins with the hydrolysis and esterification of the used oil to create ester compounds. Then, active compounds are extracted from basil leaves, which possess natural antibacterial properties. The ester reaction product is then mixed with basil extract, distilled water, and natural emulsifiers to create a floor cleaner that is not only effective at cleaning but also protects the floor from harmful microorganisms.

BiVoClean has a huge market potential, especially in Indonesia, where the use of floor cleaners is a daily necessity in households, schools, and offices. Consumers are increasingly aware of the importance of products that are not only effective but also safe for health and the environment. This product has a positive impact both ecologically and socially. Environmentally, BiVoClean prevents pollution from used cooking oil and reduces dependence on synthetic chemicals. Socially, BiVoClean opens up opportunities for the collection of used cooking oil from households and empowers local communities. Thus, BiVoClean serves as a tangible example of circular economy principles and sustainable green innovation.

More than just a floor cleaner, BiVoClean symbolizes a shift in perspective—that waste can be transformed into something valuable. This innovation proves that concern for the environment and the creativity of young people can lead to concrete solutions that benefit not only physical cleanliness but also environmental preservation. BiVoClean is a small step towards a greener, healthier, and more sustainable future for Indonesia.
