Microalgae-Based Eco-Friendly Packaging Innovation Leads UNDIP Students to Gold and Best Presentation at the 2025 National Event

PADANG — Students from Diponegoro University (UNDIP) have once again achieved impressive results at the national level. At the Andalas Scientific Week (PIA) 2025 event held on May 11–12, 2025, by Andalas University in Padang, West Sumatra, the team from the Industrial Chemical Engineering Technology (TRKI) Study Program successfully won two prestigious awards: the Gold Medal for the Energy & Environment Category, and the Best Presentation award.

The team, consisting of Sigit Pramana (leader), Maya Qisthina Gaissani, Mochammad Wibisono Faizun S, and Aisha Adinda Satyarani, brought forth an innovation in environmentally friendly packaging based on the microalga Chlorella vulgaris. This innovation is an edible film that has the potential to be a sustainable packaging solution.

Utilizing Local Microalgae for a Greener Environment

In their scientific work, the team utilized the microalgae Chlorella vulgaris—which contains various bioactive compounds such as polysaccharides, proteins, and antioxidants—as the main ingredient in the production of biodegradable packaging. By combining these microalgae with a substrate from tofu liquid waste in the form of nata, they successfully developed a biopolymer-based thin film. This packaging is not only environmentally friendly and naturally biodegradable, but also functions as active packaging capable of extending food shelf life thanks to its antimicrobial properties.

“Chlorella vulgaris has great potential as a source of natural materials. Unfortunately, its use in Indonesia is still limited, even tho its content is very beneficial,” said Maya, one of the team members.

Strong Research Collaboration and Academic Support

This innovative project is the result of collaboration between TRKI UNDIP team members, with the full support of the supervising lecturer, Yusuf Ma’Rifat Fajar Azis, S.T., M.T. Additionally, support came from the Head of the TRKI Study Program, Mohamad Endy Julianto, S.T., M.T., who encouraged students to actively participate in scientific competitions to hone their creativity and applied research skills. “This competition is not just a contest for us, but also a tangible contribution from vocational students to global environmental issues.” “We greatly appreciate the guidance of our lecturers and the support of the study program,” said Sigit Pramana.

Andalas Scientific Week 2025: A Prestigious Platform for Young Innovators

PIA 2025 is an annual national-level scientific competition that brings together students from various universities to compete in research, technological innovation, and scientific presentation. This year, the competition carries the theme “Green Innovation and Sustainable Solutions for Indonesia’s Future,” aligning with the sustainable development agenda and the vision of Golden Indonesia 2045.
