Indonesian International Student Mobility Awards (IISMA) is one of the scholarship schemes from the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research and Technology of the Republic of Indonesia to fund Indonesian students in one semester mobility programs at leading universities and leading industries abroad. Divided into two schemes for undergraduate and vocational students, IISMA is one of the Kampus Merdeka programs that is quite interesting to students because it offers academic opportunities, industry experience, and international cultural exchange.
Deshinta Maharani, or Rani as she is usually called, is a batch 2021 Industrial Chemical Engineering Technology student who has the opportunity to qualify for the IISMA 2023 Vocational program at the University of Missouri-Kansas City, United States of America. Having a dream to continue studying abroad and exploring many things that have never been obtained at home is a strong reason for Rani to register for this program. As stated by her, there are many benefits to be gained by participating in IISMA, such as tuition fees and living cost that 100% covered, conversion of credits, and being able to establish relation with international students.
Rani will spend one semester of her studies in the United States by taking the Renewable Energy course, which course is quite linear with her current study program. She took the course because she saw the urgency of using renewable energy to replace fossil fuels which needed to be used in line with the depletion of petroleum supplies, and she hoped that this alternative energy could be implemented in Indonesia en masse. The reason she chose the United States as the destination country was because the country had already implemented a large number of alternative energy sources, making the United States the right country to study this course.
Regarding tips for passing the IISMA program, according to Rani, it is necessary to prepare for an English test, prepare essays, and practice interviews carefully in advance. In addition, students must actively seek information related to IISMA or all matters regarding overseas studies, and do not hesitate to consult lecturers regarding course selection and Host University.
