Jagan Village, Bendosari District, Sukoharjo Regency, 28 July 2024 – On Sunday, 28 July 2024, Nadyn Amalia Resi (KKN Team II UNDIP student), carried out an initiative activity in Jagan Village, Bendosari District, Sukoharjo Regency. This event aims to convert used cooking oil waste into aromatherapy candle products, which are expected to provide economic and environmental benefits to the local community.

Used cooking oil not only has a negative impact on human health but also poses a significant hazard to the environment. Improper use and disposal of used cooking oil can lead to various health problems and environmental pollution.

Nadyn Amalia Resi, a student of Industrial Chemical Engineering Technology, Vocational School as the initiator led a training for the people of Jagan Village on how to utilise used cooking oil waste to make aromatherapy candles. In this training, participants were taught the process of making candles, starting from processing used cooking oil to adding aromatherapy ingredients to create a quality final product.

Participants’ Enthusiasm during the Activity

The training involved the people of Jagan Village, especially the local PKK women who were interested in improving their skills and creating new economic opportunities. Nadyn acted as the main facilitator in this activity.

The activity was held in the village hall of Jagan Village, which had been prepared to accommodate the training participants as well as the equipment needed during the activity.

The training event took place on Sunday, 28 July 2024. The activity time started from 08.00-11.30 WIB, allowing participants to gain a thorough understanding of the candle-making process.

This initiative aims to utilise used cooking oil waste that is usually thrown away carelessly, thereby reducing the negative impact on the environment. In addition, this activity also provides additional economic opportunities for the people of Jagan Village through the production of aromatherapy candles that can be sold to supplement the income of local residents.

The training began with an explanation of the dangers of waste cooking oil pollution and the importance of recycling. Then, participants were given step-by-step instructions on how to process used cooking oil into candles. The process involves melting the oil, adding natural fragrance ingredients, and moulding into candle moulds. Participants also received practical training and tips on marketing their aromatherapy candle products.

“The existence of this training provides great economic opportunities for MSMEs in this village, besides that it is also useful in protecting the environment,” said Mrs Susanti, one of the Jagan villagers.

With this training, it is hoped that the people of Jagan Village can make better use of waste, reduce negative environmental impacts, and improve economic welfare through high-value aromatherapy candle products. Nadyn Amalia Resi expressed great hope that this initiative will become a model that can be applied in other villages around Sukoharjo Regency.
